Where is Brisbane?

Brisbane River

Brisbane, the river city, is a lovely city, set on the banks of the Brisbane River.  It is only an hour away from the Gold Coast to the south or the Sunshine Coast to the North in the southeast corner of Queensland.  We live about 7km from the city centre that is easy to get to by car, bus, train or ferry.

South Bank

This is a great area. There is a cultural centre with a museum, theatre and arts centre. Lots of restaurants, cafe's and market stalls (on the weekend).  The piece de resistance is the lagoon and man-made beach, with the city as a backdrop it is not a bad place to spend a few hours!

Check out the attractions here:  http://www.south-bank.net.au/

The Quiz

Sherry and Sean introduced us to a great night out that has now become a weekly routine. Every Wednesday evening we go to the Brunswick Hotel in New Farm for food and 'Trivia' hosted by Harry!  Along with Sherry, Sean, Aarron, Jonelle and Andrea we are 'The Commoners'.  There are a few rounds, General Knowledge, Music, Specialist and puzzle page and then the bonus questions and after every round 'Oi' questions!  Sean is the current 'Oi' champion, having two under his belt.  It is a test of nerve and brains as when you can guess who or where Harry is describing you have to shoot your hand in the air and shout 'Oi'.  If you get the answer wrong your whole team is out of that Oi round, but if you get it right, you win a bottle of wine!  The other week we had an amazing run and ended up winning two rounds and the whole quiz!  That means 12 beers and cash!

Liz's Job

At the end of October, just after our holiday to Airlie Beach, Liz secured a 6 month job covering maternity leave in Regulatory Affairs for Mayne Consumer Products based in Virginia, north Brisbane.  Mayne is a global company that has absorbed many small businesses one of these being Bullivants Natural Health Products in Virginia. Basically it is a neutraceutical business that manufactures and markets numerous vitamins. See www.naturesown.com.au.  My job involves registering their products with the regulatory body here in Australia called the TGA.  It is a great opportunity to learn about a new aspect of consumer products and the people I work with are great. So all in all it was a great job to take whilst here in Oz.

The Ekka

The week we arrived in Oz was also the week of the Brisbane Show, locally known as the Ekka! It is a very big thing for the city and Bribanites even get a day off work to go as the wednesday of show week is a public holiday. We went to the show on the Friday evening and it was a spetacular introduction to Australia. We sat in the main area and saw an outback show, car, bike and horse stunts and a great firework display.
