One of our aims when we came to Australia was to get our Padi scuba licences, and we achieved that goal after one month. We did a course through prodive (www.prodivemilton.com.au) which ran over two consecutive weekends. The first weekend was in the classroom in the mornings and a swimming pool in the afternoons, and introduced us to the basics of breathing underwater, which feels as surreal as it you might imagine! The second weekend was based on an island just off the Brisbane coast called North Stradbroke Island. This is a beautiful island where Brissie people go for weekends away. The diving on these days was was absolutely awesome! We saw turtles, rays, a wobbegong shark, parrotfish, stonefish (very nasty), and loads of different reef fish. The group we were in was a good bunch of people. 3 Brits (including us!), 3 Germans, a Canadian and even a token Aussie! The instructor was called Jo, and was  very patient and encouraging, which was a big help. We seemed to do OK, and we passed the course with flying colours! Now we can't wait to get back in the water again and as the expression goes, to "blow some bubbles"!

 Second Scuba Expedition

When we bought our PADI open watercourse it included two extra recreational dives.  We took up this opportunity on 5th October, when we headed off to Spot X off Moreton Island on the ProDive boat.  It was a great day. Being at the dive shop at 6:30am was a bit of a killer, but it was worth it.  We headed off by bus to the port of Newport. Where we boarded the ProDive boat and headed out to sea.  Spot X was about 1.5hour boat trip away. Once there we put all our gear on and then with one giant stride off the boat we were submerged once more in the underwater world.  Spot X turned out to be an underwater pinnacle, which harboured lots of colourful fishes (including pipe fish) and the occasional turtle. It was a fantastic feeling to be floating around in our buddy pairs just going where we wanted instead of having to do the drills that were part of the course.  We were down there for 26mins and went to a maximum depth of 20.5m, a bit naughty as we were only supposed to go to 18m.  The second dive was a short boat ride away at Flinders reef.  The terrain here was different to Spot X with lots of colourful coral and the amazing sight of three turtles in suspended animation.  What a way to spend your weekend!! We really enjoyed it and were absolutely exhausted by the end of the day!!
