21st-22nd December 2002 - Dave's 30th Birthday

Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort is on Moreton Island in the bay just a short boat ride away from Brisbane. It is a hotel that offers lots of activities that would surely keep Dave busy on his 30th Birthday (for a closer look at the facilities go to www.tangalooma.com).  We boarded the Tangalooma flyer from a quay not far from the centre of Brissie for an action packed weekend.

After a warm up game of crochet whilst Mum slept off some jetlag, we went Quad biking.  Moreton Island is part of the Great Sandy region, and therefore explains why the island is totally made of sand which made challegning Quad bike terrain. What a fantastic way to spend an hour or so. We had a few warm up laps on their training track then is was off to the middle of the island where we cruised round sandy corners and came hurtling down sandy slopes, stopping off now and again to admire the view! Our instructors were great and it was a bargain to boot!!

It was time to go and feed the wild dolphins. Every evening a number of dolphins arrive at the resort where they are hand fed by that nights guests. We had the pleasure of feeding Rani a 10 year old male. It was great too see these majestic animals up close, you werent allowed to touch them, but after being told how to hold a fish in the correct way the dolphin gently took the fish from your hand. It was amazing, and the sunset was a spectacular backdrop.

A pleasant evening was had toasting Dave into a new decade. Then first thing on Sunday it was time to explore the Tangalooma Ship wrecks. 12 ships have been deliberately sunk in a row to form an artificial reef to provide protection for boats visiting the island. This however has also provided a huge haven for tropical fish and therefore an excellent dive site. We went on a fantastic dive. A great debut for Dave's new dive computer. Our guide took us in and out of the various boats and we saw millions of fish, including Wobbigong sharks, moray eels and a puffer fish.

The next activity was to explore the interior of the island and have a go at sand tobogganing.  We all climbed a huge sand dune and then hurtled down it on a piece of hardboard! IT was just like sledging except if you fell off, you got sand in all orifices (D!). This is Dave half way down the slope!

A pleasant cruise home rounded off a fabulous action packed weekend.
